An end-to-end solution for Britains highways

The Requirement

A highway authority needed a reliable supply partner for road traffic signage – not just for planned schemes, but for the full range of day-to-day requirements that come with managing a road network. That means permanent signs, temporary signs, posts and fixings, delivered consistently and to specification, with the flexibility to respond when something urgent comes in.

The Challenge

Long-term supply contracts sound straightforward until an urgent order lands with a short turnaround and the production schedule is already full. The risk for any highway authority working with a sign supplier is that the supplier treats reactive orders as somebody else’s problem. Signs that are needed quickly for a road closure or an emergency repair cannot wait for the next available slot.

Our Approach

From the outset, we built reserved capacity into our production schedule specifically to absorb orders as they arrive under this contract. That means a new requirement does not have to compete with everything else already in the queue, there is space for it. For genuinely urgent orders, we put on overtime. It is a straightforward commitment, but one that has to be built into how the business operates rather than promised case by case.

All permanent signs are manufactured to TSRGD specification and CA certified for public highway use within our NHSS 9A approved quality management system. Temporary signs are produced to BS 8442. Every order meets the same standard, whether it is a single replacement sign or a large batch for a new scheme.

The Outcome

The contract has run continuously with consistent specification, reliable delivery and the capacity to respond when it matters have kept it that way.

We have worked closely with Standard Signs and have found them to be diligent and professional in the delivery of this contract. This has enabled the Authority to meet its statutory and legislative obligations in maintaining its traffic sign assets. A key factor in the successful delivery of the service has been the consistently collaborative culture established between both parties. As a result, works are delivered within required timeframes, to budget, and – equally importantly – to a high standard of quality.
